Food Forward's Spring Melt Supports Hunger Relief Nonprofits

Local nonprofit organization and NBC4 21st Century Solutions grant recipient Food Forward’s mission is to rescue fresh local produce that would otherwise go to waste, connecting this abundance with people in need.  The organization collects fresh surplus fruits and vegetables from backyard fruit trees, public orchards, farmers markets, and the downtown Los Angeles Wholesale Produce Market.

With the help of more than 7,000 volunteers and a dedicated staff, Food Forward has recovered and donated more than 32 million pounds of fruits and vegetables with 100 percent donated to hunger relief agencies across eight counties in Southern California.

Food Forward's annual "Spring Melt" annual event on April 22, 2017 helps support the organization's mission to recover produce to more than 100,000 people in need each month. Now in its 7th year, the event brings together fine food, spirits, and changemakers from across Southern California’s food and beverage scene in support of Food Forward’s hunger relief and waste reduction efforts.
