Jury Decides Academy Gets First Crack at Statuettes

A Los Angeles jury has found in favor of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in its lawsuit against three women -- including one who lives in Rancho Mirage -- who possess Oscar statuettes once owned by film legend Mary Pickford and Charles "Buddy" Rogers.

The Academy sued the women, claiming it has the right to buy the statuettes before they are sold to anyone else. The women maintained they were not bound by any such agreement and wanted to sell one of the Pickford Oscars and give the proceeds to charity.

A judge will hear further legal issues in the case next week.
