Though the Oscars ceremony has had a lot of unexpected additions and highlights over the years -- Roberto Benigni standing on the back of a row of chairs, Jack Palance breaking into push-ups, the occasional streaker even -- there is one thing that's never happened: The Oscars have never happened outdoors.
The Oscars and the outdoors are two concepts that haven't necessarily been much associated before now. Nope, the 2013 ceremony is not headed outdoors -- uh, because late February would mean a lot of parkas on the stars, and no dress designer wants that -- but there will be a new Academy-backed summer screening series happening under the stars.
It is indeed called Oscars Outdoors and the new venue was revealed on Monday, May 7. Ready for it? It's at the Academy's Hollywood campus, so the one off Vine, not Wilshire. Meaning Tinseltown has just scored another screen. That's a big woot woot right there.
The summer series kicks off on Friday, June 15 and wraps on Saturday, Aug. 18. The movies happen every Friday and Saturday and here's something to remember: Fridays go grown-up, with classics and more adult fare, while Saturdays are come-one-come-young'uns. Family films will be the name of the game.
And here's the swell price: five bucks. That seems to be the standard Academy price for most of its events, save the Oscars, which we are free to attend (but you have to get nominated first, or invited, so there's that to consider).
The list of films is up; "Casablanca" opens the shebang on June 15. So here's looking at you, Academy, and your just-five-bucks, Hollywood-based, summer-outdoor-film-funtimes.
