Picnic Baskets and Tiny Binocs at the Ready

If you've been to the Bowl on a perfect, marine-layer-ish June evening, you know it kind of goes blue and gray around, oh, 7:50PM. Pearly even. Let's just say luminescent. Shadows are growing longer, the crowd's settling in, baskets and bags are rustling and sliding beneath feet, the occasional excited smattering of applause is breaking out here and there.

And you think, yep, I'm in Hollywood. At a landmark. Nicely lemonaded and/or merloted, and possibly stuffed with panini or grapes. And I'm about to watch some very talented performers on a world-class stage. And night is falling.

There's really nothing beyond that to say except The Hollywood Bowl. Summer. Tradition.

Except, perhaps, the headliners who are showing for the Bowl's 2009 opening night. Josh Groban, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Angelique Kidjo, Roger Daltrey, among others, will be there on Friday, June 19th. John Williams is a presenter. And Garth Brooks. Trisha Yearwood is performing. And Frederica Von Stade.

Hello, pearly nights and picnics and music. The season wraps in early October. Already feels too soon.
