Imagine No Religion; Imagine a Lawsuit

LOS ANGELES -- An atheist group is suing Rancho Cucamonga for the city's alleged role in removal of the organization's "Imagine No Religion" billboard.

The Freedom From Religion Foundation says the Bill of Rights prohibits the appearance of the endorsement of religion. The U.S. District Court suit was filed in Los Angeles Nov. 26.

The suit says removal of the billboard message "conveyed a message that religion is favored, preferred and promoted by the city of Rancho Cucamonga."

The General Outdoor sign company took down the billboard after the city asked if there was a way to get it removed. The city's redevelopment director Linda Daniels says they got 90 complaints.

A telephone message left Monday for Daniels wasn't immediately returned.
