Roosters Seized in Cockfighting Bust in Coachella

About 100 roosters were seized by sheriff's deputies Thursday and several people were detained at what a sheriff's sergeant described as a "cockfighting event" on Avenue 53 in Coachella.

At about 10 a.m., deputies found a cockfighting arena, cages and the roosters, according to sheriff's Sgt. David Adams.

People at the event tried to leave in a hurry as deputies arrived, and some left without their vehicles, according to Adams. Several people were detained and later released pending further investigation, Adams said.

County animal control officers took possession of the rosters, Adams said.
