We've all seen familiar scenes in the movies: The crowd roars as two jockeys pull in front of the pack; their horse's hooves pound the ground; they're neck and neck and it's a photo finish!

Well, now it's time to see it live.

Beginning July 18 and through September 5, San Diego's Del Mar Racetrack opens its gates for an exciting summer season of horse racing. Home to only the best trainers, jockeys and of course the nation's top horses, the Del Mar Racetrack is the perfect place for the whole family to enjoy this thrilling sport. Wager on your favorite horse, and -- who knows? -- maybe you could go home a champion yourself.

Become part of a rich tradition that has included Bing Crosby greeting the first guests in 1937 and Seabiscuit winning his infamous, pulse pounding race by a nose in 1938. Don't miss your chance to witness another of these extraordinary events. Races run five days weekly, from Wednesday through Sunday.

Hungry for more action, possibly of the non equine variety? Music fans are welcome, too. You can catch a free headliner concert at 4 p.m. every Friday following the day's last race. Past performers include reggae legends The Wailers and festival favorites The Flaming Lips.

Once you've worked up an appetite at the track, you can count on a variety of comfort food concessions to keep you satisfied, from burgers and fries to fish and chips. With children under 17 admitted for free, the Del Mar Racetrack is the perfect place for your family to spend an evening full of sport, food and fun, or how they put it,  "where the turf meets the surf!"
