The Museum Behind the Museum

The Hammer is opening up the back of the house.

When you visit an acquaintance's house for the first time, do you pay more attention to the rug in the living room or the contents of the medicine cabinet?

The answer, for most people, is so very much the latter that medicine cabinet snooping has practically become a punchline. That's because we like see the behind-the-front-of-the-house stuff, being the curious humans we are. Just a fact. And for lovers of art, there are few more irresistible invitations than heading into the offices and back warrens of a major museum.

The Hammer Museum is extending such an invitation on Tuesday, Jan. 11. The Back of the House Tour is a first-come, first-served free look at the access restricted areas of the institution. "Learn what art hangs in our office," says the write-up. Is this akin to finding out what kind of toothpaste your dentist uses? Maybe, a bit.

Just ten people will be allowed, so you'll want to arrive in Westwood early. Time is 12:30 p.m. on Jan. 11.
