Tyler Perry Comes Up Big in NAACP Image Awards Noms

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. -- Writer/producer Tyler Perry loomed large at Wednesday's unveiling of the 40th NAACP Image Awards nominations, with his series "Tyler Perry's House of Payne" receiving the most television nods and his films "Meet the Browns" and "The Family That Preys" earning nominations in motion picture categories.

The NAACP Image Awards honor projects and people who promote diversity in the arts in television, recording, literature and motion pictures. The nominations were announced at the Beverly Hilton hotel.
 
"Tyler Perry's House of Payne" led the television categories with six nominations, garnering nods in all five TV comedy categories, including two for best supporting actor.

"Ugly Betty" earned five nominations, while "The Game" and "Grey's Anatomy" each earned four.

"House of Payne" will compete for top TV comedy honors with "30 Rock," "Everybody Hates Chris," "The Game" and "Ugly Betty."

"Grey's Anatomy" was nominated for best television drama, along with "House," "Lincoln Heights," "The Unit" and "The Wire."

In the film categories, "Tyler Perry's The Family That Preys" was nominated for outstanding motion picture, along with "Cadillac Records," "Miracle at St. Anna," "The Secret Life of Bees" and "Seven Pounds."

Alfre Woodard was nominated for outstanding actress for her work in "The Family That Preys," while Angela Bassett was nominated in the same category for "Tyler Perry's Meet the Browns."

"The Secret Life of Bees" collected seven nominations in the film categories, including outstanding motion picture, outstanding actress nods for Dakota Fanning and Queen Latifah, a supporting actor nod for Nate Parker and supporting-actress nominations for Alicia Keys, Jennifer Hudson and Sophie Okonedo."

The Image Awards will be presented Feb. 12 at the Shrine Auditorium. Perry and actress Halle Berry will host the ceremony.
