Woman Arrested in Hit-and-Run That Injured Boy

Police Wednesday arrested a suspected hit-and-run motorist accused of  critically injuring a 7-year-old boy who ran into the street in front of his South Los Angeles home to chase a ball and was struck by a minivan.

Maria Del Carmen Trujillo, 41, of Los Angeles, was booked on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and held in lieu of $50,000 bail, the Los Angeles Police Department reported.

The crash occurred in front of the victim's home in the 6900 block of Estrella Avenue, near West 70th Street, about 6 p.m. Monday.

Witnesses told police that the driver initially stopped and momentarily got out of her minivan before speeding off without calling for help or trying to render aid.

The boy, whose name was withheld, was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
