Six people have been charged with a scheme to help Chinese citizens obtain U.S. student visas by taking required English proficiency tests for them.
Five California residents were arrested Tuesday. The sixth is believed to be in Taiwan.
A federal grand jury indictment handed up in Los Angeles claims the six used counterfeit Chinese passports to impersonate 19 different people and took the required Test of English as a Foreign Language for them at locations in and around Los Angeles.
The defendants could face up to 10 years in federal prison if convicted of conspiracy, identity theft and using a false passport.
