Hermosa Beach Barricade Fails to Turn Up Armed Suspect

Police descended on a Hermosa Beach apartment complex Monday, believing a suspect with a weapon was holed up in a bathroom, but after a nearly two-hour standoff, the person inside was determined to be unarmed.

Los Angeles County fire crews initially responded around 4 p.m. to a report of smoke coming from a unit at the apartment complex in the 400 block of Herondo Street. When they arrived, however, they were unable to enter the complex because Hermosa Beach police were inside dealing with what was believed to be a possibly armed and barricaded suspect.

Some residents of the complex were evacuated as police swarmed the complex.

Around 5:45 p.m., police cleared the apartment. According to reports from the scene, the person inside the unit was not armed but was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
