Two children who were found in a creek in San Bernardino County died on Tuesday, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

A mother and her two children, a 4-year-old girl and a 2-year-old boy, were playing near Mill Creek near the Thurman Flats picnic area Tuesday afternoon.

The children were identified on Wednesday as Sophie and Deejay Humann.

According to the sheriff’s department, the mother was attending to her son when her daughter was taken downstream.

As the mother tried to look for her, the 2-year-old boy also disappeared and was assumed to have been taken down the river as well.

The mother sought help from another family at the picnic area but was not able to find her children.

According to the station, at approximately 4:03 p.m., deputies with the Yucaipa Station, Sheriff’s Air Rescue, Mentone Station County Fire personnel, U.S. Forest Service Rescue Crew and San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Search and Rescue members assisted in searching for the children.
