Arrest Made in Kidnap Attempt of 13-Year-Old Girl

A 54-year-old man was arrested Monday on suspicion of trying to kidnap a 13-year-old girl at gunpoint in Rancho Palos Verdes, sheriff's officials said.

Deputies from the Lomita sheriff's station responded about 7:30 a.m. to a report of a man with a gun in the 28000 block of Highridge Road.

"Upon their arrival, deputies were told a white male adult, armed with a handgun, attempted to force a female juvenile into his truck, said Deputy Guillermina Saldana of the Sheriff's Information Bureau.

Deputies searched the area -- during which time a nearby school campus was locked down as a precaution -- and located and detained a man fitting the suspect's description.

"After further investigation, he was identified as the suspect in the original incident," Saldana said.

Garrett Webber of Rancho Palos Verdes was taken to the Lomita station, where he was booked on suspicion of kidnapping and assault with a deadly weapon, with bail set at $100,000, the deputy said.

The motive was unknown, he said, adding that the kidnapping attempt "appears to be an isolated incident."
