A University Park woman has been charged with attempted murder and child abuse for allegedly stabbing her 6-month-old daughter with a pair of scissors.
Maria Mendez, 39, was scheduled to be arraigned Thursday afternoon at the downtown Los Angeles courthouse on two counts each of attempted murder and child abuse, and one count of assault with a deadly weapon for an alleged attack on her husband, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.
The criminal complaint includes the allegations that Mendez inflicted great bodily injury on a victim under 5 years old and used scissors as a deadly weapon.
Mendez allegedly stabbed the girl once inside their home Tuesday and then threatened to stab her husband when he pulled the baby away and ran outside, according to Deputy District Attorney Miji Vellakkatel.
One of the attempted murder charges involves the girl, while the other count of attempted murder and the count of assault with a deadly weapon involve the alleged attack on her husband.
The woman had allegedly burned the girl a day earlier, the prosecutor said. One of the child abuse charges stems from that alleged attack.
The girl -- who was not conscious or breathing when firefighters arrived -- was taken to a hospital, where she was revived, authorities said.
