Body of the Missing OC Swimmer Washes Ashore Two Days After Search

A body washed ashore in Huntington Beach Thursday afternoon, the coroner has confirmed that it was the body 18-year-old Jessy Cook was missing since Tuesday night.

The female body washed ashore near Tower 7 at 12:45 p.m., said Huntington Beach police Officer Angela Bennett.

Cook was last seen about 11:40 p.m. Tuesday on or near the pier, where some of her belongings were reportedly found, and a multi-agency search was initiated by the U.S. Coast Guard. The search was suspended about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

"The Coast Guard and partner agencies searched for approximately 11 hours covering nearly 137 square nautical miles," according to a Coast Guard statement.

The search, using boats and at least one helicopter, included Huntington Beach lifeguards and personnel from the Huntington Beach Police Department and the Orange County Sheriff's Department. Divers on what was described as a recovery operation were later recalled after their search turned up no sign of the young woman.
