A woman was struck and killed in Northern California Monday when a Corvette driver struck her and later said he thought she "was a bird," police said.
Fremont's second major car collision early Monday appeared to be an accident.
Fremont Police Spokeswoman Geneva Bosques said the driver, a 49-year-old man, told police he thought he had "hit a bird," which he quickly learned was a woman, whose name was not immediately released.
The victim was wearing a tan jacket and light blue pants, police said, and she was in the crosswalk.
The woman was killed just before 6 a.m., after the Corvette struck her at Washington Boulevard and Olive Avenue near First United Methodist Church. Police first reported the victim was male.
The driver, who was on his way to work, was not arrested, but taken to headquarters for questioning. Bosques said he was cooperative. He called 911 and stayed until police arrived.
A passerby at the scene, Mahesh Patel, said this particular stretch of road is "very dangerous."
About six hours earlier, a 4-year-old girl and her 33-year-old mother were taken to the hospital Monday morning in critical condition after the mother crashed her Honda into an oncoming Toyota Camry at Osgood Road between Blacow Road and Auto Mall Parkway.
