Church Damaged in Boyle Heights Fire

A fire damaged a two-story church in Boyle Heights Thursday morning, but no one was injured.

The flames were reported at 2:05 a.m. at 3345 E. Opal St. in what the church called a "candle room."

The blaze was doused by 62 firefighters in 26 minutes, according to Margaret Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department. The fire was primarily centered on the first floor, she said.

Firefighters were conducting extensive salvage operations and water removal, Stewart said. An LAFD Arson unit was summoned to investigate the cause of the blaze.

The church grounds also serve as a school where kindergarten children through 8th grade students attend. The 250 students will continue to go to school Thursday despite the blaze.
