A strong earthquake was reported Wednesday afternoon off the coast of central Chile.
There are no immediate reports of damage or injury.
The U.S. Geological Survey says the magnitude 6.8 quake struck at 2:28 p.m. local time (19:28 GMT) Thursday. It was centered 59 miles northwest of San Antonio in the region of Valparaiso.
The quake was at a depth of 10 kilometers.
Since 1900, several earthquakes of magnitude 8 and larger have occurred in the region, some resulting in destructive tsunamis. In 1960, a magnitude-9.6 earthquake in southern Chile was the largest instrumentally measured quake in the world, according to the USGS.
In 2010, a magnitude 8.8 earthquake was reported just north of the 1960 quake.
