Brush Fire Scorches 5 Acres in Brea

A brush fire broke out Wednesday afternoon along Carbon Canyon Road in the Brea area and quickly scorched about five acres near a residential neighborhood, authorities said.

The fire was reported about 4:15 p.m. in the 4400 block of Carbon Canyon Road, according to Capt. Larry Kurtz of the Orange County Fire Authority, which sent crews to the scene along with firefighters from the Los Angeles County, Brea and Fullerton fire departments.

About 90 firefighters responded, along with water-dropping helicopters, and by 5:30 p.m. the fire's forward progress had been stopped and crews were in mop-up mode, Kurtz said.

Carbon Canyon was closed in both directions in the area of Valencia Avenue while firefighters battled the blaze, Kurtz said.
