High Winds Delaying Coachella Campground Opening

High wind warnings are posted for Southern California's mountains and deserts, and the blustery gusts are impacting people with plans to arrive early for the second weekend of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

The festival announced on Twitter that for safety the opening of campgrounds has been pushed back from Thursday to 3 a.m. Friday.

That's one hour after a high wind warning is expected to expire.

Forecasts call for west winds from 25 mph to 35 mph with gusts to 55 mph (40 kph to 56 kph). Isolated gusts could hit 65 mph (104 kph).

The winds are from a trough of low pressure that has also brought a band of rain across the Central Coast. The unusually cold April system could also bring mountain snow showers.
