Anaheim Police Officer Shoots Bicyclist

Police say the man was a gang member.

An Anaheim police officer shot a man on a bicycle early Sunday, leaving him in critical condition.

The man, who a police spokesman said was a "documented gang member," was riding a bicycle at about 1:30 a.m. in an area where there has been tension between local gangs, Anaheim police spokesman Bob Dunn said in a press release.

The officer attempted to stop the bicyclist but he rode away, Dunn said. The officer caught up with the rider on Narda St. west of Philadelphia St., Dunn said.

During an exchange that occured there, the man on the bicycle was shot. He is in critical condition, but is expected to survive.

A handgun was recovered near where the shooting occured, Dunn said.

Anaheim has been the focus of increased scrutiny over police shootings in recent months.
