The Los Angeles Board of Public Works Tuesday selected a design firm to develop a renovation plan for the Hollywood Walk of Fame, an effort expected to cost about $4 million.

"The Hollywood Walk of Fame is a National Historic Landmark, and my HEART of Hollywood initiative will give this community the attention it deserves," said Councilman Mitch O'Farrell, whose district includes the Walk of Fame. "Our focus is on consistent attention to the necessary quality-of-life improvements for local residents and visitors."

According to O'Farrell's office, the master plan developed by the Gensler design firm will "update the streetscape concept" for the Walk of Fame with the goal of improving the public right-of-way.

The project is part of O'Farrell's HEART of Hollywood initiative that was approved by the council in December. The project is being carried out in conjunction with the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which oversees the Walk of Fame; the Hollywood Heritage preservation group; and the Hollywood Property Owners Alliance.

"We are proud to play a stewardship role in the Walk of Fame," said Kristopher Larson, president and CEO of the Hollywood Property Owners Alliance. "Given the walk's incredible allure, we know how critical it is to the image of Hollywood."
