Flying to Atlanta will soon involve less driving time for Inland Empire and eastern Orange County residents, thanks to a new non-stop Delta Air Lines route between Ontario International Airport and Atlanta that will begin taking off April of 2019.
Delta, the world's second largest commercial airline, announced plans to operate one daily flight on the route starting Apr. 22 using a 180-seat Boeing 737-900 aircraft.
A second daily fight will be added to the schedule in June.
Although Atlanta-bound Delta flights currently depart from Los Angeles International Airport and John Wayne Airport in Orange County, both are about 50 miles from Ontario International Airport.
"The new Delta service is truly a feather in our cap," said Ontario International Airport Authority Commissioner Jim W. Bowman.
"We are going to great lengths to show Ontario is a first-rate airport with the infrastructure and know-how to deliver a world-class customer experience, not to mention ample capacity for future growth."
Control of the inland airport was transferred from the city of Los Angeles to the city of Ontario in late 2016, and the airport is on pace this year to handle its highest total number of passengers since 2008, according to a news release.
Tickets for the new route went on sale on Saturday.
