SUV Crash Into South LA Store “Felt Like an Earthquake”

The store's clerk and two customers were in the building at the time of the South LA crash

A clerk at a South Los Angeles liquor store felt a powerful jolt when a sport utility vehicle crashed into the building late Monday.

The driver told police after the crash at Times Square Liquor in the 4200 block of South Broadway that he was the victim of a carjacking attempt about a mile from the store. The driver told authorities the attacker, who did not have a weapon, fled after a struggle.

The driver was hospitalized. Details regarding injuries were not immediately available.

Two customers and clerk K.C. Kim were in the store at the time of the 11:30 p.m. crash.

"It felt like a strong earthquake," said Kim. "It was very frightening."

The store was closed after an inspector red-tagged the damaged building. The Jeep Grand Cherokee left a gash in a corner of the structure.
