Man Sentenced for DUI Crash that Killed Boy and His Uncle

The boy had lost his mother to cancer not long before the collision.

A Southern California man has been sentenced to six years in prison for a DUI crash that killed another man and his 6-year-old nephew.

Thirty-eight-year-old Armando Edgar Duran Cruz pleaded guilty in April to two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter and drunk-driving causing injury.

David Wayne Cote and his nephew, Ivan Sandoval, were killed in the 2015 crash. Cote at the time was the legal guardian of the boy, who had lost his mother to cancer not long before the collision.

The Orange County Register reports Cruz was sentenced Friday. Investigators said he had been driving under the influence of marijuana, morphine and alcohol.

The newspaper says Cruz has a prior conviction in 2008 for driving under the influence.
