The pair was traversing a canyon when they discovered what appeared to be a human skull, police say.

A pair of hikers in Pacific Palisades happened upon a gruesome find Sunday when they discovered a human skull, authorities said.

Responding officers then found the skeletal remains of a human torso about 20 feet from where the skull was discovered.

Hikers were traversing a canyon in the 500 block of Los Liones Drive (map) Sunday morning when they saw what appeared to be a human skull, police said.

They reported their findings to a nearby fire station and firefighters then notified police.

The remains have not been identified. Police said it was not immediately known how much the body had decomposed.

The site is near the entrance to the Los Liones Canyon Trail, about a quarter mile north of Sunset Boulevard, just east of Pacific Coast Highway

West Bureau homicide detectives have asked anyone with possible information to call (877) 527-3247.
