Man Grabs Officer's Gun Before Wild Long Beach Pursuit, Standoff

A man sought in a stolen vehicle investigation grabbed an officer's gun and led police on a pursuit in the Long Beach area late Wednesday before a standoff that lasted nearly an hour at a gas station.

With the help from a K-9 unit, police arrested the carjacking suspect, who was allegedly involved in the shooting of a police officer before the pursuit.

The ordeal began after the Long Beach Police Department received a call about a stolen vehicle. Police attempted to arrest the man before he initiated an altercation with an officer and took his gun. He then fired at the officer and fled with the officer's gun.

The police officer was hospitalized with what police described as moderate injuries.

The man then carjacked a woman and police initiated a brief pursuit with the 27-year-old Long Beach resident around 10:50 p.m. The driver weaved through traffic on surface streets, nearly hitting one car, before he parked on a sidewalk. After about 45 minutes in the car, the man stepped outside and was struck by a non-lethal round of rubber bullets.

There were no reports of injuries to other officers or K-9 units.
