Weekend: Comic-Con International

The Milky Way's most mondo pop culture everything fest is underway, in San Diego.

Comic-Con International: Are you currently in the queue for Hall H, along with hundreds of your movie- and TV- and comics-loving besties? Then you're probably studying the schedule for this gargantu-tron gathering of pop culture everythingists, which hums at the San Diego Convention Center through Sunday, July 23. Teasers for still way-out blockbusters, famous actors rocking wacky disguises, hundreds of artists, mega meet-and-greets, and the buzzy pop-up SyFy wedding chapel are filling out the full, full, super-extra-full festival.

FYF FEST: Speaking of gigantic gatherings, but of the musical, arts-cool sort, there is this headliner-packed extravaganza, a yearly multi-day tune-tacular that has its early roots at LA State Historic Park. It has grown stupendously, and its large-scale location of Exposition Park just fits. Missy Elliott, Björk, Frank Ocean, Nine Inch Nails, A Tribe Called Quest, Erykah Badu, Iggy Pop, Solange, and a caboodle of other huge acts will be performing through Sunday, July 23.

Delicious Little Tokyo: Head downtown for "... a weekend of delicious food and drinks harvested from the streets of Little Tokyo!" Think sake tastings, a host of pokes with a range of yummy sauces, and bento box demos, too. Want to try your hand at flower demos? Or discover the art of sushi-makery? Every day on the schedule yields something memorable and appetizing. Find your foodie dream, and awesome instruction, from Friday, July 21 through Sunday, July 23.

Wienerschnitzel Weiner Dog Nationals: Whether you call Doxies "wee frankfurters" or "bun-sweet bundles" is up to you, of course, but the fact is this: Dachshunds look a lot like hot dogs. So this summertime tradition, which runs at Los Alamitos Race Course, makes sweet sense, and it gets even sweeter: The Saturday night, July 22 canine competition is a fundraiser for the Seal Beach Animal Care Center. Cheer on the pups, help other pups, get your pic with the life-sized hot dog that is the Wienerschnitzel mascot.

Los Angeles Bacon Festival: Perhaps the salty, savory, Bloody Mary-ready strip, formerly a straightforward breakfast staple, has become such a major part of your daily menu. Perhaps you think of new ways to enjoy it, and with what pairings, and, yes, how it works with a dessert vibe. Ponder no longer: The party at Los Angeles Center Studios is all about the breakfast-lunch-dinner-dessert-beverage add-in. Snack around "dozens of restaurants" and enjoy a brew, too on Saturday, July 22.
