Suspect in Custody for UCLA Slashing

A UCLA student is in jail today, held on one million dollars bail, after he allegedly stabbed of a female student multiple times, including slashing her throat.

Damon D. Thompson was booked on suspicion of attempted murder.

The attack happened Thursday, just past noon, in a chemistry lab on the Westwood campus, according to UCLA police. Police say they don’t know what motivated the attack, but witnesses told police there was some sort of verbal altercation leading up to it, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Another student who was inside the lab told the newspaper that the suspect appeared to be punching the victim, but he soon realized it was much more serious when the young woman slumped over, bleeding from her neck.

She remains hospitalized in UCLA’s Ronald Reagan Medical Center in serious condition. Authorities have not yet released her name.

Thompson walked away from the scene of the attack, but UCLA police immediately sealed the building and took him into custody.

The University will provide counselors today for students who witnessed the attack.
