A suspected kidnapper who sparked a manhunt in Malibu was arrested in Maywood Tuesday evening following a standoff that forced the lockdown of a nearby school and church, authorities said.
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department officials confirmed that Jaci Armando Baragan was taken into custody. He was inside a residence in the 4400 block of East 60th Street when he was arrested, said Nicole Nishida, LA County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman.
St. Rose of Lima school and church were locked down during the hours-long standoff, which started about 2:20 p.m. and ended about 5:30 p.m. It was not immediately known if anyone was inside the locked-down buildings during the standoff.
Baragan was named on Monday as the prime suspect involved in a sexual assault and kidnapping in Huntington Park. He then allegedly forced the woman into a Nissan Sentra that was reported stolen in the Huntington Park area and drove to Malibu.
The man and woman were in the car, parked on the shoulder of PCH, Monday morning. When a deputy attempted to handcuff the man, he ran north toward Corral Canyon Road.
"He immediately bolted, knocking the deputy down," Steve Whitmore, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department spokesman, said on Monday.
Whitmore warned Malibu residents to be on the lookout for a barefoot man wearing a black tank-top and jeans, and "a rather unique ornament on his right wrist -- a handcuff."
