Avon's Pasadena Distribution Center to Close

There are about 170 employees at the 353,000-square-foot landmark Avon Products Inc. plant.

The giant Avon beauty products distribution center in Pasadena is closing down and taking with it hundreds of jobs.

There are about 170 employees at the 353,000-square-foot Avon Products Inc. plant.

"We really thought they were a great company to have in town," said Eric Duyshart, Pasadena Economic Development Manager. "It certainly is sad news that they're going to be leaving."

Spokeswoman Jennifer Dwyer Vargas said transition plans are being worked out, but added that it's unlikely the employees will be staying on with Avon.

The New York-based company says its Pasadena and Atlanta distribution centers are being closed as part of a plan to save $400 million a year by the end of 2015.

The struggling beauty products seller announced last month that it plans to cut about 1,500 jobs and exit two Asian markets as it starts on a broad restructuring plan in an effort to turn around results.

"They were, at one time, one of the major employers here in Pasadena. One of the top ten," according to Paul Little, of the Pasadena Chamber Of Commerce.
