Dead Baby Found in Camarillo Strawberry Field

Cause of death not released

The body of a newborn baby was found Monday morning in a Nyeland Acres strawberry field and police are searching for the baby's mother, according to Ventura County Sheriff's Department officials.

"The body had been there fairly recently; probably overnight, maybe from last night," said Sgt. Eric Buschow.

The body was found in the 3300 block of Central Avenue (map) in an unincorporated area of Camarillo.

"It's scary," said Gabriel Ortiz, who found the body around 9:30 a.m.

Authorities could not immediately confirm the sex of the victim, and the cause of death was not released.

"One of our concerns: investigators want to find out who the mother is," Buschow said. "They are concerned about her health and well-being.

"This is something that should never happen, I mean, there are mechanisims in place where people can go and drop off a baby, no questions asked."
