Car-Free CicLAvia Shuts Several LA Streets

The event was held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday

Several streets in Los Angeles were shut down on Sunday for the eighth CicLAvia event celebrating a car-free city.

The event, dubbed "Heart of LA," was held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with 7.5 miles in downtown Los Angeles, the Westlake district, Chinatown and Boyle Heights closed to motorized vehicles.

CicLAvia was open to people traveling in any direction on foot as well as by bicycle, skateboard, baby stroller, rollerblade and any other mode of transportation that is not motorized.

Street closures included portions of Spring Street, Broadway, Boyle Avenue, Central Avenue and First, Fourth, Seventh and Ninth streets.

Metro Rail provided enhanced service with longer and more frequent trains to the 11 stations along the route.

CicLAvia is based on the "Ciclovia" event in Bogota, Colombia that started more than 30 years ago in response to congestion and pollution.
