Woman Killed When SUV Drives Into Crowd at Ice Cream Shop Identified

A 73-year-old woman died outside the Farrell's Ice Cream Parlour, fire officials say

Authorities have released the identity of a 73-year-old woman who was killed when an SUV drove into a crowd standing outside a Southern California ice cream shop and injured several others.

The crash happened just before 6 p.m. at Farrell's Ice Cream Parlour in Buena Park, Orange County Fire Capt. Gonzalez told NBC4.

Marisa Malin died in the hospital after the crash, according to a coroner's report. At least six others were hurt, including two adults and three children. One victim refused treatment at the scene.

The reason the man drove into the crowd was not immediately known, but a witness at the scene said the man may have accidentally accelerated while in a parking spot.

"We were actually sitting outside, like 10 or 15 minutes before that even happened," witness Giovanna Hernandez told NBC4.

"On the same bench, the third one over on this side, we were sitting on that exact bench," she said, pointing to the scene of the crash.

No diners inside the restaurant were hurt, but they recalled the scene outside after the crash.

"The young boy, about the age of 9, was holding his knee. I turned the corner to go around all of the firefighers and police and all that, and I see a lady (being put) into a gurney," witness Bryson Miller said. "I see another lady up against a bench with blood coming out of her leg."

"All they came here for was some ice cream," Miller said. "I'm just really sorry for them."

The driver was not hurt in the crash, officials said.

Note: An earlier version of this article listed the victim as a 60-year-old woman, but investigators later changed her age to 73.
