A security guard shot and killed a man who hit him on the head outside a Stanton amusement park, authorities said today. The shooting occurred about 11 p.m. Tuesday on Starr Street at Beach Boulevard, next to the Adventure City amusement park and Hobby City shopping center and museums, said Orange County sheriff's Lt. Mike Jansen. A man was declared dead at the scene, Jansen said. His name was withheld pending family notification.
"An on-duty security guard became involved in a physical confrontation with a person, which led to a shooting," said sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino. "The person was shot by the security guard and died at the scene."
Amormino said detectives were trying to determine what sparked the confrontation between the man and the guard, who suffered a head injury. Jansen said the guard was taken to a hospital following the shooting, adding that he was conscious as he was being transported. The guard, who was seen wearing a belt with a holster while on the gurney, appeared to have a large laceration on top of his head resulting from a blow with a metal rod, said authorities.
An area resident said the guard regularly patrols the Adventure City and Hobby City property. Adventure City features a Ferris wheel, roller coaster, vintage carousel, petting farm and miniature airport.
