Nearly 6,000 people pledged to rally Sunday ahead of International Women's Day, and by midafternoon nearly a thousand were marching through the streets of downtown Los Angeles.
The march, set to feature poets, musicians and speakers, kicked off at 12 p.m.
Demonstrators began marching at 1st Street between the Los Angeles Police Department Headquarters and City Hall, and made a loop to return to the start location.
Light rain sprinkled the event as some demonstrators carried umbrellas labeled, "water is life" -- an ode to the protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline.
Drinking water was to be provided along the route, according to the organizers' Facebook event. Metered parking would be free on Sunday, and using public transportation was highly encouraged.
International Women's Day is officially on Wednesday, March 8.
