Man Escapes as $2M Sailboat Catches Fire, Sinks off Malibu Coast

Lifeguards rescued the sailor, who escaped the boat shortly after it went up in flames in Paradise Cove

One person escaped a $2 million sailboat after it caught fire and sank off the coast of Malibu Tuesday night, said Los Angeles County Fire officials.

The flames ignited the 55-plus foot vessel at around 11:30 p.m., said authorities.

There was only one person on board at the time, and he notified firefighters with a 911 call from his cellphone. The man was rescued by Los Angeles County lifeguards with a dinghy.

Firefighters had the fire out in about an hour, said officials, but the sailboat sank at around 3:30 a.m.
