Long Beach Beaches Reopened

The strand along Long Beach was reopened Friday after tests proved a raw sewage spill in Burbank this week did not contaminate open coastal waters.

The precautionary closure was prompted by reports of a 50,000-gallon raw sewage spill that entered the Los Angeles River in Burbank Tuesday, said Michael Johnson of the Long Beach City Manager's Office.

``Water samples collected along the entire open coastal beach for two consecutive days following the spill showed no indication of contamination from the spill,'' Johnson said in a statement.

Johnson said water quality monitoring will continue in the area on a weekly basis.
