Preparing for Heat Wave, County Opens 55 Cooling Centers

The Department of Public Health has opened cooling stations throughout the county to provide citizens with protection from the heat.

County officials have opened "cooling centers" throughout Los Angeles County in preparation for an impending heat wave that NBC meteorologists warn could bring triple-digit temperatures to the region.

Organized by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, the 55 cooling stations in the county aim to provide protection from the heat for the elderly and those with heat-related health issues, said Supervisor Michael Antonovich.

Officials are urging citizens to take extra precautions to guard against the rising temperatures, including drinking extra water and avoiding unnecessary sun exposure.

Symptoms of dehydration can include dizziness, fatigue, muscle cramps and increased thirst.

All Los Angeles city buildings are cooling centers year-round, officials say, but they have not been activated, which would mean extended hours at certain locations.

NBC4 has compiled a list of cooling centers in the county to help citizens navigate the hot weather.
