Man Killed After Stepping in Front of Train

A second person this week has been killed after stepping in front of a train.

An unidentified man was killed today when he ran into the path of a Metrolink train and lay down on the tracks northwest of Van Nuys Airport, according to police and fire officials.

The man, believed to be between 30 and 40 years old, was struck by the train at about 1:50 p.m. near Balboa and Roscoe boulevards.

The engineer on Metrolink Ventura County Line train 109 told police the man ran in front of the train near the Northridge station and lay down on the tracks. The engineer said he was unable to stop the train in time to avoid hitting the man, who died at the scene.

On Wednesday, a father watched helplessly as his 15-year-old daughter stepped in front of a Burlington Northern freight train and was killed in Fullerton. The girl was said to have been upset an authorities were trying to determine if she was committing suicide.
