Ducks, Kings May Be Back in Action Soon With Hockey Deal

The 113-day NHL lockout will end if players approve a deal negotiated Sunday morning

NHL hockey may soon resume for the Stanley Cup champion L.A. Kings and the Anaheim Ducks as a tentative agreement has been reached to end the 113 day-long lockout.

MORE: Details of the deal

Representatives from the two sides negotiated for 16 hours in New York from Saturday afternoon until the early hours Sunday to produce a deal.

The owners and players were under intense pressure to make an agreement this week. They faced a deadline of Thursday or Friday that would allow for a 48-game season. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman had said that the league could play a shortened season having no fewer than 48 games.

While the structure of the season is still to be determined, it is believed that teams will play only opponents within their own conferences.

All games through January 14 and the All-Star game have been canceled. Those games represent half of the original schedule.

The tentative contract still requires approval by the players. If ratified, the new labor pact would not only save the season, but would allow the league to avoid the embarrassment of having a second season canceled because of a labor dispute.
