Parolee Suspected in Shooting Death Had Robbed Same Store

DESERT HOT SPRINGS, Calif. -- A parolee arrested in the fatal shooting a clerk during a Feb. 4 holdup at the Super 1 grocery in Desert Hot Springs had robbed the same store a decade ago, police said Wednesday.

Meil Augustus Edmund was arrested Saturday in Palm Springs, and investigators say they recovered evidence tying him to the holdup at 68075 Hacienda Ave. and the fatal shooting of shot 33-year-old Juan Pablo Munoz-Tovar, police said at a news conference Wednesday.

The parolee has two robbery convictions -- one at the same store 10 years ago, police said.

Edmund is suspected of robbing the place about 9 p.m. that Wednesday night. The gunman shot Munoz-Tovar with a semiautomatic pistol, even though he was cooperating, police said at the time.

The clerk, who had worked in the store about a year, left behind a wife and five children.
