Small Plane Lands Upside-Down in Front of Glendale Home

The plane was flipped over in front of a home

A Cessna 210 crashed through trees and power lines Monday night before landing upside-down in front of a Glendale home.

The fixed wing single-engine plane, registered to a man in Moreno Valley, landed upside down on the sidewalk in the 1200 block of Glenwood Road near Grandview Avenue about 8:30 p.m. The plane was removed from the front yard of the residence Tuesday morning as utility crews worked to restore power.

As of 11 p.m. Monday, about 1,600 homes in the area were without power. About 300 homeowners were without power Tuesday morning.

The pilot, identified as 55-year-old James Roth, was treated on the scene complaining of shoulder pain and was transported to the hospital with minor injuries, according to aerial communications. He was released Tuesday morning, according to police.

No other injuries were reported.

"I would venture to say he and everybody else was very lucky last night," said Sgt. Tom Lorenz. "It was very nice evening. People were out walking their dogs, they're exercising -- and when he comes down he hits three power poles and a tree and lands in front of a house, but he does not cause any damage to any cars, no structural damage to any houses."

The pilot, who was the only person on board, told air traffic controllers that he would try to land at Van Nuys Airport after noticing engine trouble, according to Ian Gregor, with the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) Pacific Division.
