Police Vehicle and Caltrans Truck Involved in Head-On Crash on Empty Freeway

An officer was seriously injured Saturday when a Riverside city police patrol vehicle and a Caltrans vehicle were involved in a crash on westbound Riverside (91) Freeway, when it was reopened following an earlier incident, authorities said.

The crash was reported at about 4:30 p.m. near Adams Street, according to a Riverside police statement.

The injured officer was hospitalized with stable vital signs, police officials said. The Caltrans worker was not injured.

The freeway was closed in both directions just before the crash because a woman had threatened to jump off the Adams Street overpass and she was persuaded to come down.

The California Highway Patrol was investigating.
