Residents Evacuated During Lomita Standoff

Deputies initially called for welfare check

A standoff with a Lomita man barricaded inside a home forced nearby residents to be evacuated early Thursday morning.

Deputies were called to a welfare check near Neko Drive and 251st Street around 2:20 a.m. Deputies said the man was possibly armed and suicidal.

A command post was set up on Pennsylvania Avenue and 251st Street.

Deputies called out crisis negotiators to assist with the standoff. Deputies entered the man's residence around 4:05 a.m. and found that he died of an apparent suicide.
