San Fernando Valley Police Chase Heads Down the 405 Freeway Into South Bay

NBC Universal, Inc.

A police pursuit of a driver wanted for erratic driving and speed in the San Fernando Valley traveled down the 405 Freeway through West Los Angeles, down to San Pedro and Carson, before concluding in Palos Verdes Estates Tuesday.

The chase started around 4:58 p.m. on the eastbound 101 Freeway around the Las Virgenes Road exit, the California Highway Patrol said.

Newschopper4 Bravo was over the chase around 5:15 p.m., as the car was moving through relatively heavy traffic on the 101 Freeway near the Winnetka Avenue exit.

The car hopped off the freeway and was traveling in the Encino and Van Nuys areas on surface streets, often getting stuck in traffic. However, the car seemed to accelerate and increased the tension by driving in the center divider, breaking red lights and occasionally going on the wrong side of the street.

Around 5:35 p.m., the car got on the 405 Freeway southbound and headed into the Sepulveda Pass.

The driver was going across several lanes and appeared to possibly clip a car on the 405 Freeway in West LA, before driving on the shoulder of the freeway.

Around 5:50 p.m., the car continued south and passed LAX.

At around 5:55 p.m., the driver took the Inglewood Avenue exit off the 405 Freeway and moved onto surface streets in the Lawndale area.

Around 5:58 p.m., the driver pulled into a parking spot in a business complex. After police units arrived a few moments later, the driver took off again at a high rate of speed.

Around 6:05 p.m., the car moved further south into the Torrance area before getting back on the 405 Freeway southbound. From there, the driver took the 110 Freeway southbound, heading towards San Pedro.

At 6:14 p.m., the driver reached the end of the 110 Freeway and moved onto surface streets in San Pedro. Moments later the driver pulled an illegal u-turn and ended up moving onto the 110 Freeway northbound.

Around 6:23 p.m., the driver transitioned to the 405 Freeway southbound in Carson, heading towards Long Beach. The driver decided to get off the freeway and use surface streets in Carson and continued towards the Torrance area.

The driver returned to the Torrance area before making the ascent up the hill into the Palos Verdes area. At one point, the driver appeared to be following a police SUV up the hill.

Newschopper4 Alpha, which had taken over the pursuit from Newschopper4 Bravo, had to pull off the pursuit due to fog in the Rolling Hills Estates area.

The CHP said the suspect was arrested in the 2200 block of Via Fernandez in Palos Verdes Estates.
