Hourslong Power Outage Affects The Grove, Thousands of Customers

Utility crews Saturday finished restoring power to customers affected by an electrical outage in an area of the Fairfax district that included The Grove shopping and entertainment center, where stores were closed until repairs were completed.

Service was interrupted about 3:30 p.m. Thursday to customers in the area, including the Park La Brea apartment complex on Third Street, across the street from The Grove.

Service was restored to all but about 200 customers by early Friday afternoon, according to the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. Officials at The Grove said power had been fully restored at the shopping center.

Power was fully restored to the area by 4:40 a.m. Saturday, according to a LADWP tweet.

About 3,500 utility customers were without electricity in the area at 8:30 a.m. Friday, according to the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. The department thanked customers for their patience in another tweet that morning.

Shortly after 1 p.m., LADWP tweeted power had been restored to 3,400 customers. Crews were working to restore power to the "remaining 200" customers, the department noted in the tweet.

Although the outage is just an inconvenience for most residents, one woman, Chloe Temptchine, relies on an oxygen machine at home that needs to be plugged in. She uses an oxygen tank when she goes outside.

"I used up all my tanks overnight," she said. "These are not made for night use, so every few hours I change them, but I'm now completely, 100 percent out of oxygen."

She said she could not contact the oxygen company because her phone battery died, so now she's scrambling to get oxygen delivered, which will need to be done without the elevator.

The cause of the outage was under investigation.
