Status Update: UCLA Students in Tizzy Over Franco

James Franco is getting dissed... by his own alma mater.

The actor was chosen as UCLA's commencement speaker for this spring's graduation ceremonies.  He just graduated from there a year ago.

But students have now turned to Facebook to voice their anger.  There's a new Facebook group called "UCLA Students Against James Franco as Commencement Speaker".

They say he hasn't accomplished enough to be the speaker and was just an average student while at the university.  The UCLA senior who founded the group wrote, "We deserve better:  There are so many better students than he, and yet they aren't candidates to be our keynote speaker."

But a UCLA rep tells Access Hollywood that many other students are on on the committee to choose the speaker and they did have a say in Franco's choice.

Franco most recently co-starred in the film Milk and received a Golden Globe nomination for his role in Pineapple Express.  He is taking graduate classes at Columbia University.
