Uniforms May Be Heading to LAUSD

LOS ANGELES -- A motion urging support for school uniforms in all Los Angeles Unified campuses was introduced Wednesday by a city councilman who formerly served as school board president.

In his motion, Councilman Jose Huizar said uniforms could help diminish violence and disciplinary problems in schools.

"I can tell you from my experience as school board president, school uniforms help create a sense of order and camaraderie among students and allow them to focus on academics," Huizar said. "For many of our students in LAUSD, particularly those from lower-income communities, the fact that they cannot afford name-brand clothes is a daily distraction they can do without."

The motion was forwarded to the Los Angeles City Council's Rules and Government Committee.
